Dawn of War 4 Packs 70 Branching Missions Across 4 Full Campaigns

King Art Games has revealed that Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4 will ship with four full faction campaigns and roughly 70 missions featuring branching narratives. The developer wanted to avoid relegating major factions to simple skirmish fodder, opting instead for a massive, story-driven RTS structure.

Four factions, four cinematic perspectives

King Art decided early that each featured army needed its own dedicated story arc rather than fighting in the background of an Imperium-only tale.

In modern strategy games, single-player campaigns often treat non-human factions as target practice while human protagonists carry the entire plot. King Art co-founder and creative director Jan Theysen told TechRadar Gaming that the studio rejected that approach immediately. Dawn of War 4 gives dedicated campaigns to all four launch factions: Space Marines, Orks, Necrons, and the Adeptus Mechanicus.

Theysen pointed out that players never truly understand faction mechanics or personality when fighting them across only two or three encounters. Taking inspiration from the gold standard of narrative RTS design, specifically Warcraft 3, the studio opted to pair every army with hero units, cinematics, and distinct story arcs created in collaboration with Games Workshop. That intense focus on deep narrative stakes echoes similar creative gambits across the industry, much like how Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 ditches plot armor to restore tension to its storytelling.

Branching paths pushed the mission count to 70

What started as four standard story tracks quickly expanded once the studio introduced player choice. Theysen admitted that feature scope snowballed into roughly 70 missions after the team added hero selection and mutually exclusive branching routes.

Depending on the hero players choose at crucial junctions, the perspective of the narrative shifts. Some missions lock out others, forcing players to commit to tactical paths that alter how a sector conflict unfolds. For a genre where solo campaigns often wrap up inside 15 to 20 missions total, hitting 70 shows King Art is targeting replay value over a quick skirmish wrapper.

RTS campaigns rarely see this kind of investment anymore. Dawn of War 3 stumbled heavily by forcing a rigid, alternating three-faction campaign that pleased almost nobody. Giving Space Marines, Orks, Necrons, and the Mechanicus their own dedicated storylines with branching paths is the best signal yet that King Art understands what made the original series stick.
