Disney's Villains Land and Monstropolis: 2027 and Beyond
Disney has laid out the next phase of its park expansion: Villains Land at Magic Kingdom, a Monsters, Inc. coaster land at Hollywood Studios in 2027, two Avengers rides at California Adventure in 2028, plus Cars and Coco attractions. The details came out of D23, and the timeline now stretches to 2028.
Villains Land finally has a location and a ride lineup
Disney's first land built around its classic villains is going to Magic Kingdom, on the far edge of the current map past Big Thunder Mountain.
The entrance will feature what Imagineering's Bruce Vaughn called a "broken, twisted wishing well" — a nice bit of stage-setting before you even get inside. Two attractions anchor the land: a roller coaster through Maleficent's fortress and a dark boat ride that takes guests through the other side of the magic mirror.
The design team pulled architectural cues from Paris and Barcelona, including Antoni Gaudí's buildings, which should give Villains Land a stranger, more ornate look than the rest of the park. Disney first teased the concept at D23 in 2022, so this has been a long build-up. No opening date has been announced.
Monstropolis replaces the Muppets in 2027
Hollywood Studios is getting a Monsters, Inc. land where the old Muppets area stood, and it includes a first for Disney: a suspended roller coaster.
The coaster lifts riders 40 feet in four seconds before shooting them through the famous doors. Around it, Disney is building a Mike and Sulley-hosted show, an Elite Scarers Club, the Scareporium store and Harryhausen's restaurant, complete with an animatronic octopus sushi chef.
The Muppets didn't disappear quietly. MuppetVision 3D closed last year, and the characters moved onto Rock 'n' Roller Coaster, which reopened with a Muppets overlay on May 26 after the Aerosmith version closed March 1. That was a fast turnaround by Disney standards.
TechCortex take: the interesting part isn't the ride count, it's the timeline. Disney is asking guests to wait until 2028 for Avengers rides in a land that already exists, while Universal's Epic Universe is already pulling crowds. Monstropolis in 2027 is the real test of whether Disney can open something big on schedule.
Avengers Campus doubles, but not until 2028
California Adventure's Marvel area gets two more rides, bringing it to four total.
Avengers Infinity Defense is a multiverse battle against King Thanos featuring Ms. Marvel, Hawkeye, Captain America, Thor and Iron Man. Imagineering's Brent Strong said the ride will feel like "hurtling through worlds." Stark Flight Lab puts guests through flight instruction alongside Captain America, Iron Man and Captain Marvel.
Both open in 2028, which is a long wait for a land that already exists. The path between Cars Land and Avengers Campus is reopening soon, at least.
Cars, Coco and Indiana Jones fill out the map
Beyond the headline lands, Disney is reshaping Frontierland, Pixar Pier and Animal Kingdom.
At Magic Kingdom, Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island are gone, cleared for Piston Peak, a Cars-themed expansion of Frontierland. It will include Miss Fritter's Daredevil Spin-Along, built around a school-bus-sized animatronic, and the Cars Ridge Run Rally, a bouncy track race over mountains and through geysers. Disney showed a full-scale model at D23, but the land isn't expected before 2027 or 2028.
California Adventure is adding a Coco dark ride near Pixar Pier, built with Audio-Animatronics and set a year after the film, as Miguel revisits his journey through a museum to Héctor Rivera. Disney is coordinating the story with the announced Coco 2.
At Animal Kingdom, DinoLand USA is now a blank patch of grass. The Dinosaur ride closed in February 2026 and is being converted into Indiana Jones and the Myth of the Jade Serpent, a 1950s-set adventure inside a Maya temple guarded by a mythical creature.

What it means for you
All of this is US park news: California for Avengers and Coco, Florida for Villains Land, Monstropolis, Piston Peak and Indiana Jones. There's no word on any of these concepts coming to Disneyland Paris or Tokyo Disney Resort.
If you're planning a trip, 2027 is the year to watch for Monstropolis, while 2028 is when California Adventure's Marvel lineup is complete. Villains Land has no date, so don't book around it yet.
Disney's park slate is now a five-year project, not a single-season announcement. Monstropolis in 2027 is the next concrete milestone, with Avengers Campus and Piston Peak following. Until Villains Land gets a date, treat it as the long game.
