Honor Magic 9 Pro Max Brings $80K ARRI Cinema Looks to Your Phone

Honor has announced the Magic 9 Pro Max, a flagship phone with a dedicated ARRI Cinema mode that applies color looks and LUT support borrowed from ARRI's professional cinema cameras. It packs 200MP main and telephoto cameras, an 8,000-mAh battery and Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. Price and release date are still under wraps, and it won't launch in the US.

What ARRI Cinema mode actually does

It's not a filter. The Magic 9 Pro Max's ARRI Cinema mode uses the phone's 200MP wide and 200MP telephoto cameras to record in a 2.39:1 theatrical aspect ratio, with access to ARRI's Look library and support for importing LUT files.

ARRI is the German camera maker behind hardware that costs anywhere from $65,000 to over $95,000 new. Its cameras shot Everything Everywhere All at Once and, decades earlier, Dark Passage with Humphrey Bogart. Honor isn't getting a cheaper ARRI camera here; it's getting ARRI's color technology baked into the phone's camera app.

In practice, that means you can shoot video with looks that mimic an ARRI Alexa, including several black-and-white options. Some LUTs come preloaded, and more can be downloaded from Honor and ARRI's websites. CNET's hands-on at ARRI's Los Angeles facility compared phone footage against an Alexa shooting the same sets, and while the cinema camera clearly captured more detail, the phone held its own on color shading under ideal lighting.

The catch: the 50MP ultrawide camera doesn't support ARRI Cinema mode. Only the wide and telephoto shooters get the film-style treatment.

The rest of the spec sheet is flagship-grade

Beyond the camera collaboration, the Magic 9 Pro Max is a proper 2026 flagship with a huge battery and Qualcomm's latest chip.

The 6.8-inch display is paired with an 8,000-mAh battery, which is notably larger than what you'll find in most flagships. Charging tops out at 100 watts wired and 80 watts wireless. The phone runs on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 processor, ships with Android 17 and Honor's MagicOS 11 overlay, and supports Apple's AirDrop through Quick Share.

The front-facing camera is a 55MP square sensor that lets you take vertical selfies whether you hold the phone vertically or horizontally. Honor says this is an Android first, and it's the kind of small usability win that tends to spread across the industry once someone ships it.

The ARRI name carries real weight with filmmakers, but the value of this partnership depends entirely on the price. If Honor positions the Magic 9 Pro Max as a premium flagship, the Cinema mode is a nice differentiator; if it undercuts rivals, it becomes a genuine reason to pick this phone over an iPhone or a Galaxy. The missing US launch is a loss for American video shooters.

Why phone makers are chasing cinema credibility

Smartphones are already creeping into professional productions, and Honor wants a recognizable name attached to its video features.

Apple's iPhone 18 Pro Max has been used in baseball broadcasts, and the 2025 film 28 Years Later was shot primarily on an iPhone 15 Pro Max. Those examples give phone makers a marketing hook, and Honor is leaning on ARRI's reputation to stand out in a crowded flagship market.

The Magic 9 Pro Max also looks the part, with a unibody metal design and two-tone back glass that CNET notes resembles the iPhone 18 Pro Max. It comes in Moss Green, Shadow Black, and Glacier Silver.

Whether ARRI's color science translates into meaningfully better video for everyday users is the open question. The LUT support and aspect ratio options are aimed at people who already know what those terms mean, not casual shooters.

What it means for you

Honor hasn't announced pricing or a release date for the Magic 9 Pro Max, and the company has confirmed it won't be coming to the US. For readers in the UK and EU, availability will depend on Honor's regional launch plans, which haven't been detailed yet.

If you're in the market for a video-focused Android flagship, the ARRI partnership is worth watching, but don't plan around it until Honor shares the price and which countries get it.

The Magic 9 Pro Max is Honor's clearest play yet for the video crowd, and the ARRI partnership is more than a logo on the box. The real test comes when Honor announces the price and release date. Until then, the Cinema mode is an impressive demo without a bottom line.
