Audi Debuts Native Spotify App With Music Videos and Jam

Audi has become the first automaker to integrate a completely bespoke, native Spotify application into its infotainment system. Developed alongside Volkswagen Group software arm Cariad, the new platform drops restrictive templates in favor of a desktop-class interface with music videos and interactive features.

Breaking away from standard templates

Instead of relying on rigid automotive templates, Spotify engineered the interface from scratch.

Until now, running Spotify natively inside modern dashboards meant settling for the cookie-cutter templates enforced by Google's Android Automotive OS, Apple CarPlay, or Android Auto. While practical for bare-bones safety compliance, those frameworks lock app developers into rigid lists and predetermined button grids. Audi and Volkswagen software subsidiary Cariad decided to scrap those guardrails entirely.

Spotify's automotive team took direct control over every visual element on the screen. Rather than shoehorning menus into a pre-baked structure, the resulting layout mirrors Spotify's widescreen desktop client, giving prominent placement to album artwork, queue controls, and curated playlists across sprawling dashboard displays.

Music videos and group queues reach the dashboard

The shift in architecture introduces several capabilities that drivers previously could only access on a phone or laptop. Real-time lyrics, synthetic host voice tracks via Spotify DJ, and group session controls through Spotify Jam are now wired directly into the vehicle's media stack. Just as radical electric vehicles push boundaries on power—much like the Zero DS setting a 271-mile range benchmark—automakers are now treating cabin software with that same technical ambition.

Display restrictions adapt automatically depending on who is looking at the screen. On the central console, interactive features and music videos operate only while the car is parked; the screen drops the video feed the instant the vehicle starts moving. However, when an Audi includes an optional passenger-side display, front-seat riders can watch music videos and follow synchronized lyrics continuously at highway speeds.

Ditching sterile Android Automotive templates is a welcome step forward. Carmakers often stumble when writing their own infotainment media players, but handing the canvas directly to streaming engineers delivers the polished, full-featured interface drivers actually want without phone cords.

Availability and rollout

The native Spotify integration is arriving on newer Audi vehicles equipped with the brand's latest infotainment suite across North America and Europe. Neither Audi nor Volkswagen has confirmed when the bespoke client might roll out to sister VW Group marques like Porsche, Volkswagen, or Škoda, though the underlying code was engineered under Cariad's shared software umbrella.

Bespoke in-car clients show how automakers can modernize media delivery without forcing users back onto smartphone projection cords, setting a fresh benchmark for dashboard media design.

Frequently asked questions

Can the driver watch Spotify music videos while driving?

No, video playback on the center console shuts off automatically once the vehicle starts moving. Only front passengers using a dedicated passenger display can watch video in transit.

How does Spotify Jam work in the Audi app?

The dashboard displays a QR code that passengers scan with their phones, letting everyone in the vehicle add songs to a shared queue without sharing login credentials.
