Canva Craft Debuts in Fourth Place on DesignArena AI Rankings

Canva has launched Craft, its first proprietary image generation model built entirely by its internal research division. Trained on millions of human-made design templates, the engine focuses on composition and graphic hierarchy rather than merely diffusing raw pixels.

Layout-first generation beats flat training data

Craft plans visual hierarchy before generating pixels.

Most commercial diffusion models learn by scraping billions of flat images, which often leaves them struggling with fundamental design logic like margins, text placement, and clear focal points. Canva built Craft by feeding it millions of human-designed templates from its own library. That training gives the system a structural understanding of layers and visual hierarchy.

Rather than assembling an image all at once, Craft plans out compositional geometry first. It determines where text, background elements, and subjects belong before committing to the final render. That approach is engineered specifically for marketing graphics, posters, and social media banners where bad alignment immediately spoils the asset.

The strategy paid off on community benchmarks. On the DesignArena leaderboard, Craft debuted at fourth place overall, besting models from Google's Gemini family and xAI's Grok. It finished first out of 87 models tested in people and portraits, took first out of 85 models in landscapes, and came in second for abstract patterns.

Cutting out third-party AI suppliers

The release represents a strategic shift for Canva, which historically leaned heavily on commercial foundation models from outside vendors. Over the past year, Canva tripled the headcount of Canva Research to build its own weights and escape rising inference costs.

Relying on external providers has become increasingly pricey for software suites attempting to bundle generation features into standard subscriptions. Owning the model weights lets Canva tailor inference efficiency to its exact UI while opening an entirely new revenue stream, especially as high compute demands push infrastructure limits—a trend visible as US public lands face 35 AI data center bids to meet surging power needs.

Canva is not keeping the model exclusive to its own canvas interface. The company is offering Craft via an API, letting outside developers and enterprise platforms plug the layout-aware generator directly into their own production pipelines.

Training on layered layouts instead of unstructured web crawls is the smartest move Canva could have made. Standard image generators create pretty pictures that fall apart the moment an art director needs to drop clean body copy on top. If Craft genuinely respects negative space and layer hierarchy via API, it will save production designers hours of manual cleanup.

Availability and developer access

Craft is rolling out globally across Canva's web and desktop platforms. Access for third-party integration is being distributed through Canva's developer API, with future lightweight and budget-focused iterations currently in development.

Frequently asked questions

How does Canva Craft differ from other image generators?

Craft was trained on millions of human-designed Canva templates. This allows it to plan visual balance, margins, and layer hierarchies before rendering, making it far better suited for graphic design and marketing materials than tools trained on flat web images.

Can developers use Canva Craft outside Canva?

Yes. Canva is making Craft available through an API, allowing third-party services and software developers to integrate the image generator directly into external workflows.
